Why daily talking beats drills

Flashcards and worksheets ask a child to get an answer right. Talking asks a child to have a thought and say it out loud. That second thing is what actually builds confidence with a new language.

Lumi is built around real conversation, not quizzes. It listens to what your child says, responds to the actual idea behind it, and asks one curious follow-up question at a time, so your child ends up doing most of the talking. There is no scorecard for getting a sentence wrong. There is just another question, asked warmly, that invites another try.

For a child who is shy about speaking English, or who only gets to practise it at school, that low-pressure repetition matters more than any single lesson. A few minutes of being heard and responded to, most days, adds up in a way that an occasional structured drill cannot match on its own.

What a session with Lumi looks like

Open the app and Lumi, a friendly fox, is already listening. There is no button to press before your child talks. They can speak, or type if they would rather, and Lumi replies out loud in a warm, kid-friendly voice.

Conversations follow a guided path of themed activities, shown as a simple roadmap, one activity unlocking after the last. Alongside free chat, Lumi weaves in short "say it with me" moments where it introduces a word or phrase and invites your child to repeat it, always in service of whatever your child was already talking about, never as an interruption.

Progress shows up as XP, speaking levels, and badges, which keep younger children especially motivated to come back and try again.

How you set it up and stay in control

You, the parent, sign in first, using your Google account. You create your child's profile yourself: their name, age, how comfortable they are in each language, their interests, and what you would like help with. None of this comes from your child signing up directly. Lumi is not something a child sets up alone.

Once your child starts talking with Lumi, you keep a full view of what happens. Parent Corner lets you read past conversations, see new words your child has picked up, and set controls: which topics are off-limits, quiet hours when Lumi will not respond, and a daily time limit. Every one of these settings is enforced by Lumi itself, not left as a suggestion sitting in a menu your child could ignore.

For younger and older children

You tell Lumi your child's age when you set up their profile, and Lumi shapes itself around it rather than running one script for every age. For a child around 3 to 5, expect shorter exchanges, simple vocabulary, and encouragement for any attempt at all. For a child around 6 to 10 with more English already under their belt, conversations can go further: longer stories, more back-and-forth, and vocabulary that stretches a little each time.

In both cases, it is your child's own stated interests and goals, set by you, that shape what Lumi actually talks about, not a fixed curriculum tied to a grade or level.

What Lumi is not

Lumi is not a tutor. There is no lesson plan, no test, and no grading. It is a play-and-practice companion, built to sit alongside real teaching and real supervision, not to replace either.

It is also not a way to hand your child a screen and walk away. Lumi is designed to be set up and supervised by a parent, and every conversation is something you can read afterwards. It is not a substitute for professional educational assessment, speech support, or your own attention, and it is not built to be the only voice your child talks to in a day.

Does Lumi actually teach spoken English, or is it just chatting?

Both, in the same breath. Lumi holds a real conversation with your child and, inside that conversation, introduces words and phrases for your child to repeat back, tied to the topics they already like.

What age is Lumi actually good for?

Lumi is designed for children roughly ages 3 to 10. You set your child's age when you create their profile, and conversations are shaped around it.

Can my child use Lumi without me around?

Lumi is set up and supervised by a parent or guardian. You create the account, add your child's profile, and can review every conversation afterwards in Parent Corner, along with quiet hours and a daily time limit.

Will Lumi correct my child if they make a mistake in English?

Lumi responds to what your child says and keeps the conversation going, weaving in words and phrases for your child to try, rather than marking answers right or wrong the way a worksheet does.

Is this instead of my child's school English lessons?
