Is an AI Companion Safe for My Child? A Parent's Guide

AI apps for kids are new enough that most parents are (rightly) cautious. Rather than a blanket yes or no, here's what to actually check before deciding whether a given app belongs in your child's hands — questions any parent can ask of any AI product, not just this one.

1. What happens if the child asks something off-limits?

Kids test boundaries with adults and AI alike — asking about scary topics, adult subjects, or trying to get the AI to "break character" and do something outside its intended purpose. A safe kids' AI product should have this handled at more than one layer, not relying on a single system prompt to hold the line. Ask (or check the product's documentation for): does it screen input before responding, and does it screen its own output before showing it to the child? A single point of failure is a red flag.

2. Is it actually scoped to being a kids' companion, or a general chatbot with a costume on?

A general-purpose AI assistant wearing a friendly avatar is a different risk profile than a product genuinely built and restricted for children's conversational play. Look for explicit statements that the AI refuses off-topic requests (homework-cheating, adult content, general internet-assistant tasks) and stays inside a defined, child-appropriate role — this should be a stated design principle, not an incidental side effect.

3. Can a parent set real limits — and are they enforced server-side?

Quiet hours, daily time limits, and topic blocklists are only meaningful if they can't be bypassed by a tech-savvy 8-year-old changing the device clock or clearing app data. Ask whether controls are enforced using trusted server time and account-level settings, not just local app state — this distinction matters enormously in practice.

4. What data is collected, and who can see it?

Conversations with children are sensitive by nature. Check: is the chat history visible to the parent (it should be — this isn't a privacy invasion, it's a safety feature for a child's account)? Is data scoped strictly to your own family's account with no cross-account leakage? Is there a clear way to export or permanently delete your child's data if you choose to stop using the app? A legitimate product will have straightforward, written answers to all of these in its privacy policy — not vague language.

5. Is the payment and access model transparent?

Auto-renewing subscriptions that are hard to cancel, unclear trial-to-paid transitions, or payment flows that don't clearly state what you're being charged and when are all worth watching for — with any app, not just ones for kids. A trustworthy product tells you plainly when a trial ends and what happens next.

6. Does it feel like a companion, or a replacement?

The best AI companions for kids are additive — a fun, judgment-free space to practice talking, build vocabulary, and play with storytelling, alongside real relationships with parents, siblings, and friends, not instead of them. Watch for how the product frames itself: is it explicitly a practice tool and a fun friend, or is it positioned as an always-available replacement for human attention? Language matters here, and so does how it's actually used day to day — a few short sessions woven into the day works very differently than hours of substitution for real conversation.

Bringing it together

None of this means AI companions are inherently risky or inherently fine — it means the responsible ones make these answers easy to find, and the ones worth avoiding tend to be vague or silent on exactly these points. A few minutes checking a privacy policy and a product's stated safety design tells you almost everything you need to know.
