⚠️ Draft template — not legal advice This page is a starting point, not a finished legal document. Because Lumi is used by children and by families in India and elsewhere, a qualified lawyer should review this before it's treated as your real Terms & Conditions — in particular for compliance with children's privacy law (e.g. COPPA in the US) and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Placeholders below (company name, contact email, governing law) need to be filled in.

Terms & Conditions

Last updated: [DATE] · Applies to mylumi.in and the Lumi app

1. Who this is for

Lumi is a voice-based speaking and thinking companion for children ages 3–10. It is designed to be set up and supervised by a parent or legal guardian. Accounts are created by an adult ("you," "the parent"), who may add one or more children to their account. Lumi is not intended for a child to sign up for on their own.

2. Your account

You sign in using Google (via our authentication provider, Clerk). You're responsible for keeping access to your Google account secure, since it controls access to your Lumi account and everything in it. One parent account may hold multiple children's profiles.

3. Free trial and plans

New accounts get 24 hours of full access from the time the account is created, at no cost. After that, continued access requires an active subscription (details and pricing: [TO BE ADDED]), unless we've separately granted your account extended or lifetime access. We may change trial length, pricing, or plan structure going forward; we'll aim to give notice of material changes.

4. Children's privacy

We designed Lumi around a simple rule: Lumi should never try to identify or contact a child. Specifically:

  • Lumi never asks a child for their last name, address, school name, phone number, or any way to be found or contacted.
  • Lumi never suggests meeting up, exchanging contact details, or keeping secrets from parents/caregivers.
  • Whatever a parent enters about their child during setup (first name, age, interests, etc.) is used only to personalize conversations and is never sold.
  • Conversation transcripts are stored so a parent can review them in the app's Parent Corner — they are not used for advertising and are not shared with third parties except as needed to run the service (e.g. our AI and hosting providers).
  • A parent can request deletion of a child's profile and transcripts at any time by contacting us (see Section 10).

We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children in a way that falls outside the above. If you believe a child has provided us information beyond what's described here, contact us and we'll remove it.

5. What Lumi is (and isn't)

Lumi is an AI conversation partner meant to encourage speaking practice, vocabulary, storytelling, and confidence. It is not a substitute for professional educational assessment, speech therapy, or mental health support. If a child discloses that they are hurt, scared, or unsafe, Lumi is designed to gently encourage them to tell a trusted adult — this is not a substitute for active supervision.

6. Acceptable use

Don't use Lumi to attempt to extract personal information about other users, to abuse or overload the service, to reverse engineer the app, or for any purpose that isn't broadly consistent with a safe product for young children.

7. Content and AI limitations

Lumi's replies are generated by AI and pass through an automated safety check before being shown, but no automated system is perfect. If you see a reply that concerns you, please report it to us (Section 10) and stop the session.

8. Termination

You may stop using Lumi and request account deletion at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms or that we reasonably believe pose a safety risk.

9. Limitation of liability

Lumi is provided "as is." To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from use of the service. [Placeholder — finalize with counsel for your jurisdiction.]

10. Contact

Questions, deletion requests, or safety concerns: [SUPPORT_EMAIL].

11. Governing law

[Placeholder — e.g. "These terms are governed by the laws of India." Confirm with counsel, especially given users outside India.]

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as Lumi changes (e.g. when subscriptions launch). We'll update the "Last updated" date above when we do.
